Our Mission:

The Friends of the Performing Arts is a parent support group for the music and theater programs at Dover-Sherborn High School. This group promotes and supports the music and theater department activities, and encourages student and community participation at these events. Through its fundraising efforts, FOPA provides annual scholarships to students excelling in the music and theater programs; provides recognition to senior students participating in the bands and vocal group; support and assistance to the annual music and theater productions; and provides a vehicle for parental input to the performance programs.

Dear Parents and Friends,

Friends of Performing Arts (FOPA) welcomes you to the 2008-2009 school year!! We are a group of dedicated parents who believes the arts are a vital part of the high-quality, well-rounded educational experience provided to our children. We support all of the performing arts at the high school including the drama and musical programs; concert and jazz bands; chorus; and the a Cappella group “Junction Street Harmonics” with hundreds of hours of volunteer work and direct financial support.

Through the drama and music programs, the performing arts at DS have become an integral part of our curriculum. Our students not only perform on stage but also at home football games where they provide spirit to the DS Raiders, and other school and community events including our wonderful winter and spring concert series.

This fall, DS drama presented the play Much Ado About Nothing as our first “Shakespeare-in-the-Park” performance. Each year, our spring musical brings together students and faculty from drama, band, chorus, stagecraft and other diverse disciplines. We are really excited about our upcoming production of Fiddler on the Roof and hope to involve anyone interested in helping with its success!!

In addition to the ongoing programs mentioned above, we are always seeking new ideas and programs to support a wider range of performing arts opportunities for our students. For example. we are hosting our second annual Jazz Brunch on Sunday, Nov. 2 at the Sherborn Inn. We may also be adding a third drama production in late spring. To make these programs a reality, we invite your participation early in the year.

It takes a large financial commitment to make all this happen and we need your support. A few highlighted areas where we provide support include:

  • Scholarships to graduating seniors (in 2008, we granted seven scholarships)
  • Grants for workshops, equipment, and material requests for the arts
  • Pre-concert breakfasts and other spirit-building events throughout the year for performing students including a year end Drama Banquet
  • Behind-the-scenes support for all drama productions and concert events

A primary source of funding for FOPA is our Annual Fundraising Drive. Please consider the importance of the performing arts at Dover-Sherborn, and be as generous as you can. One hundred percent of your contribution goes directly to fund the Performing Arts. Please be sure to include your email address with your donation form if you would like to be notified in advance of our upcoming events and post the attached schedule on your refrigerator so you don’t miss any of our programs.

Lastly, we invite you to become involved in FOPA. Our meetings are held in the High School library the second Monday of each month except November’s meeting which will be Tuesday the 18th and December’s meeting which will be Monday the 15th. We hope to see you at one of our events this exciting year.

If you would like to contact us directly, please call Wendy Bornstein at 508-785-1133 or email wbornstein@mindspring.com or Judy Hershey at 508-653-3091 or email judy.hershey@comcast.net.
